Honda CRF110F

The CRF110F is the step after a PW50 or CRF50. It has a four speed gearbox with an automatic clutch, so a child learns gears without a clutch lever, an electric start with a kick backup, and an air cooled four stroke that runs on anything and never breaks. From 2019 it got fuel injection so it starts easily in the cold and does not need the carburettor cleaned every time it sits.

It suits kids from about six to ten, or a small adult who wants a pit bike. It is not a race bike; for a child who wants to race, a 65cc two stroke is the next step. For a child who wants to ride around the farm or the trails, this is the one.

Change the oil every 10 to 15 hours or a few times a season. It takes about a litre of 10W 30 or 10W 40 four stroke oil and there is no filter, just a screen. Clean the air filter every few rides and keep the chain adjusted and oiled, because kids do not.

Check the valve clearances once a year. Keep the throttle limiter set where it suits the child and check the brakes before every ride.

Look for a straight frame, wheels that spin true, working brakes and a throttle that snaps shut. On the carburetted bikes make sure it starts and idles cleanly, because a gummed carburettor is the usual reason one is being sold cheap. On the fuel injected bikes check the battery holds a charge. Cosmetics do not matter.
