Match the boot to how you ride. A hinged race boot (Tech 7, Instinct) for motocross and racing; a softer, more flexible boot for trail and enduro; a youth boot for kids. The price difference is mostly in the hinge and the ankle protection.

Two to four seasons of regular riding for a good boot, longer if you replace the soles and buckles, which most brands sell as spares. Keep them out of the sun and let them dry after a wash.
