Kawasaki KLX110

The KLX110 is the bike that fills every pit and every back paddock. It is a 112cc air cooled four stroke with a four speed gearbox and an automatic clutch, electric start on the newer bikes, and a build quality that shrugs off years of neglect. The KLX110L (and later the R L) has a manual clutch and taller suspension for older kids and adults.

It suits kids from about seven to eleven, or an adult who wants a pit bike. It is heavier and better built than most cheap imports, and a used one is worth what you pay for it because it will still be running in ten years.

Change the oil every 10 to 15 hours or a few times a season. It takes about a litre of 10W 40 four stroke oil and there is no filter, just a screen. Clean the air filter every few rides and keep the chain adjusted and oiled.

Check the valve clearances once a year and the brakes before every ride. On the carburetted bikes, drain the carburettor before storage.

Look for a straight frame, wheels that spin true, working brakes and a throttle that snaps shut. On the carburetted bikes make sure it starts and idles cleanly. On the electric start bikes check the battery holds a charge. Check for a stretched chain and hooked sprockets. Cosmetics do not matter on a KLX110.
