Beta RR 300 2T

The Beta RR 300 2T is the Italian alternative to the KTM 300 EXC, and for a lot of Australian bush riders it is the better bike. It has had oil injection since 2016 so there is no premix, it starts on the button, the chassis is plusher and more forgiving than the KTM, and the engine makes its power in a smooth, tractable way that suits technical riding. Beta went to a new frame and engine in 2020 and again in 2023.

It suits a trail rider in tight, steep or rocky country, a hard enduro rider, or anyone who has ridden a KTM 300 and wants something a little softer and a little different. Against the KTM it gives away a touch of outright power and the dealer network is smaller, but the ride quality is excellent and the price used is usually lower.

Gearbox oil every 10 to 15 hours (about 800 ml of a light gear oil or JASO MA 10W 40), air filter every ride in dust, and keep the oil injection tank topped up with a good full synthetic two stroke oil. Never let it run dry. Rings around 60 to 80 hours and a piston around 100 to 150 for a trail bike.

Beta is still carburetted, so keep the jetting right for the season and clean the carburettor if the bike sits. Clean the power valve at every top end. Grease the linkage and swingarm after wet rides.

Make sure the oil injection has never run dry and that the pump is working (look for a light haze of smoke on a warm engine). Check the jetting is stock or known. Look for a dented pipe, bent radiators and a worn clutch. Check the rego status. Beta parts take a little longer to get in Australia, so a bike with a good dealer nearby is worth more.
